Let's Be Honest

(about Constitutional Reform)

Constitutional Reform = Higher Taxes

Do you really think that the wheels came off the wagon of the Alabama Constitution just recently ? Why has there been no groundswell of support for "reform" for the past several decades? The reason is clear: that "groundswell" has been manufactured. Ask yourself why we have gotten along okay with the Constitution of 1901 for the past 100 years. Not good enough, you say ? Then let's fix it. Let's just not fix it to death. Be forewarned that many of the forces behind constitutional reform are not exactly supporting only a tweaking of a generally functional document. Rather, they are advocating radical change in the tax structure for the State of Alabama. After all, they reason, the tax structure in Alabama is too "unfair." Translation: if they get their way, get ready for massive tax increases in the State. The Constitution of 1901 is the only thing that stands between them and bloated state government. Many other states have bloated governments just like the national government has become. And in every one of them the tax rate is almost too much to bear. If you think you already pay enough in taxes, consider that the present Alabama Constitution is your only protection from those who think government is the solution to every evil. They won't often admit it, but the real reason they want a new constitution is to do away with the very protections we in Alabama have enjoyed from high real estate taxes for one hundred years.

Look closely at the "movers and shakers" of the constitutional reform movement.  They are college professors, newspaper editors and others almost all of whom have a history of supporting liberal causes, programs and agendas in this State. Why wouldn't college professors want higher taxes ? Why won't they just be honest about the real motivation here?
