Okay, Let's Rewrite It

They Don't Really Want To Do It Right

A few of the ideas the reformers seem to have left on the table, and about which you are not likely to hear:

How about term limits for politicians ? This seems to have been a topic of discussion not that long ago, and many states have successfully term-limited their public officials. Let's include strict term limits this time around.

Tax limits. That's right. The old document limits taxes, particularly real estate taxes. Leaving these out is the strategy.

Protection for gun rights. The reformers hate it, but probably acknowledge that they cannot quite get rid of this protection - at least not yet, though many would love to do so.

Let's reform voting procedures to help prevent fraud. The federal government would have to approve, but there is a way to craft fair and reasonable voting procedures such that no one is denied the right to vote - once, anyway.

    Protection for property rights.

Giving the citizenry the right to recall bad public officials. The last time this idea was seriously discussed in Alabama was in 1978 when Fob James was governor the first time - and then for only about two minutes before the politicians killed it.

These are just few ideas. You may have more. Rewriting the Constitution, in and of itself, is not an inherently bad idea. It is only when it is done with ulterior motives that we must question every move and proposal.
